Humanity on Earth: actions and consequences. A video created by students in collaboration with Terra Institute.
Everyone is talking about the climate emergency. How could we ignore such a pressing issue, with its many implications for the role of our future designers? To address this twofold challenge, the course we taught at IUAV Design adopted an open, collaborative approach.
A team effort
Students first learned –through hands-on exercises– the basic rules of motion design. They then tackled a group project: producing a video about CO2. Starting from content provided by Terra Institute, a consulting firm for environmental sustainability, they worked through all the stages needed to produce a film that invites awareness and #cambiarevisuale.

Starting from the brainstorming and writing phases, the scenes to animate and tackle as a group were defined. A common graphic language and animation style were then chosen. Teamwork and constant dialogue were the most powerful tools for building awareness. The final 15-minute video below was later featured in a final exhibition and at other university events.
