Comune di Venezia

Venice Tourism-friendly City

“Welcome to Venice, do you know the acqua alta phenomenon?” These are the first words we wanted to convey in this series of informational videos made with the Municipality of Venice, teaching visitors how to behave during this well-known lagoon phenomenon.

Before talking about altimetric measurements
and astronomical tides, we decided to answer a few questions.

What is the acqua alta (high tide)? Why does it happen? How high does it get? When does it happen? How do you get around the city without getting your feet wet? And how does the city protect itself from exceptional events? With the help of simple language and graphics, we tried to explain even the most complex concepts.

From motion graphics to a collage of images and signs.

To bring together so many diverse materials, we decided to move spontaneously, always favoring direct communication without too much overstructuring. What emerged is a well-defined, easily recognizable image that winks at contemporary media and their lightness.

Writing was the foundation we built on.

There were many initial requirements: be technical, light, thorough, precise. For us, the language needed to be dynamic and witty, engaging the viewer and raising, in every video, a question that could carry them through to the next one. The result managed to bring all these requirements together, and since we love Venice so much, working on it was stimulating for us too.

Historical research that led us
to discover hidden treasures.

Thanks to historical archives such as the Photographic Archive of the Municipality of Venice, Fondo Giacomelli, we worked with evocative, high-impact images that helped us tell the story of the acqua alta in Venice.

In the end we understood that tides rise and fall all over
the world, but the acqua alta is the high tide that floods the streets.
So if there were no Venice, there would be no acqua alta either!

Tourism Friendly cities
Funded by the Urbact Programme, the Tourism-Friendly Cities project aims to explore how tourism can and should be sustainable, reducing its negative impact on the various districts of the city and on the areas most affected by overcrowding. The goal is to develop shared strategies within the urban context, through joint work with all the stakeholders involved, leading to solutions and experiences that balance the needs of the community with the promotion of tourism, through sustainable urban development of the environment, society and the local economy.
